A giant color board is one of the most useful tools for choosing colors for interior painting.
Benjamin Moore, the paint manufacturer, sells giant color boards (18-inch square) that are available at most paint retailers. We can also bring some of these color boards to our painting estimate appointments, which include a free color consultation.
But it’s easy enough to make your own color board….
Step 1: Go to a paint store and look at the 2-inch paint chip samples, and narrow down your choices.
Step 2: Buy one color (or a few colors) that you love, in the smallest amount that the paint store will mix for you.
Step 3: Find a large piece of cardboard (preferably at least 18-inches, square).
Step 4: Paint the piece of cardboard with the paint sample that you bought. Give it a few coats, to make sure you don’t have any of the color of the cardboard bleeding through.
Once the paint has fully dried, you can hold your color board up to the paint color of adjoining walls and/or ceilings, furniture, window coverings, artwork, rugs, flooring, and more.
These color boards are an easy, effective way to visualize how interior paint will look before it’s actually applied. They’re a drastic improvement over trying to make a big decision off a tiny scrap of paper (the typical 2-inch paint chip). And over the years, we’ve also found that the use of color boards is far more effective than buying 3-4 paint samples and testing them on a wall.
